What is a soil water potential sensor?

Definition and measurement object

Soil water potential sensors are mainly used to measure soil water potential. Soil water potential refers to the relative level of soil water energy. It is used to illustrate the energy state of soil water and its dynamic changes, and can provide necessary parameters for soil management and water conservancy project control.

 

Measurement content and method

The measurement of soil water potential usually covers the determination of matrix potential, solute potential and gravity potential. Different types of potential have different measurement methods:

Matrix potential: commonly used to measure by suction plate, ultra-centrifuge, moisture absorption method, sand funnel and pressure membrane instrument.

Solute potential: can be measured by osmotic pressure method, that is, calculated by measuring the concentration of aqueous solution.

Gravity potential: calculated according to relative height difference.

Pressure potential of saturated soil: can be obtained by the height of the water column in the pressure gauge or pressure tube.

 


Application scenario

Soil water potential sensors are widely used in many fields:

Scientific research: In the research work on plants and water, as well as the movement of water in soil, soil water potential is an important indicator, and the sensor can provide data support for related research.

Automatic control: It can be connected to related instruments to become a plug-and-play portable soil moisture meter, or it can be connected to a general data collector to achieve long-term dynamic monitoring.

Agricultural monitoring: Helping agricultural workers understand the hydraulic properties of the soil and determine the degree of soil drought is a key technology for achieving water-saving irrigation. For example, it can assist in determining key factors such as irrigation depth, irrigation volume, and irrigation start time in farmland irrigation, and can also be used to monitor the water content of the mountain to warn of landslides.
